My husband, Brent, and I absolutely adore living in downtown Asheville. The luxury of walking to breakfast on the weekends is probably one of our favorite parts about our new address.
This morning we braved the 20 degree temperatures (actually warm in comparison to last week!) and walked the 3 blocks to Mayfel’s across from Pritchard Park – home of the Asheville drum circle. We’ve been here about 4 times now and have tried something different every time we’ve visited and haven’t been let down yet. Mayfel’s is a southern-style, eclectic Asheville restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner and has some incredible, unique decor. We’ve typically gone on Sundays at 12PM for brunch and there is always a long wait. That’s fine most of the time when it’s warm, but today we were not going to wait in the cold. We bundled up and strolled over at 9AM and Asheville felt like a ghost town. A frozen, ghost town. Where are the tourists?!
There were only a few other diners, so we were taken right to our seat. After ordering coffee, we picked out Huevos Carolina with a side of sausage and Brasstown Steak and Eggs. So delicious. Huevos Carolina is Mayfel’s take on Huevos Ranchero with a black bean burger underneath all the egg, cheese, sour cream and salsa goodness. I thought it was a great combination and the sausage was fantastic. I was only able to eat half of the meal, so I’m looking forward the leftovers later today. Brent loved his steak and eggs – no leftovers. I’m not a huge steak fan (unless it’s Filet Mignon from Ruth’s Chris), so I didn’t have a bite, but the potatoes were perfect!
Right now Brent’s favorite places in Asheville for breakfast are Mayfel’s, The Local Joint, and Biscuit Head. I’m not quite certain of my favorite – there are so many places to eat breakfast! – but Mayfel’s is definitely a great choice! Have you eaten here? Let me know what you think in the comments!
